The artistic practice is best described as a form of time-based Arte Povera. Where the mundane surroundings become the studio and medium for the Art, often including garbage, found objects and gifts, institutions and public spaces. To create unorthodox results that questions perception and the relation between the self and the other. The practice focuses on exploring and researching the interactions between materiality and technology, and often creating surprising footage that is unconventional to traditional image production. Time, Transformation and Repetition are key elements that characterizes the work of Mikki Nordman. Firstly time plays an intricate role. Time and temporality greatly influences the choice of concepts and the time span of projects, which is evident in many of the bigger series.
Secondly through transformation, the artist seeks to explore the effects this a can have on perception and emotional experiences by altering the properties of subject, materiality and medium.
Lastly the transformational process is often expressed and highlighted through repetition. Apart from the impactful visual quality that repetition gives both on small and large scale. The artist uses repetition in visual representation and use of geometrical models as a form of deception. Repetition and Grids often convey an illusion of order and logic, this manufactured illusion of order adds a vital component in the interpretation of the artwork.
Mikki Nordman is one of the founding members of the WMC Collective.
'The process of abstraction fascinates me,
by removing the context, I automatically remove the evaluation or judgement that I as human automatically place on my surroundings. By removing the possibility to place the subject into a context I am giving it a new life, possibilities and identity, that way I can change something perceived as ‘ugly’, ‘mundane’, ‘undesirable’ or ‘annoying’ into something beautiful, interesting, curious and irritatingly intangible.''
